Two-body relaxation in modified Newtonian dynamics

چکیده
A naive extension to MOND of the standard computation of the two-body relaxation time t2b implies that t2b is comparable to the crossing time regardless of the number N of stars in the system. This computation is questionable in view of the non-linearity of MOND’s field equation. A non-standard approach to the calculation of t2b is developed that can be extended to MOND whenever discreteness noise generates force fluctuations that are small compared to the mean-field force. It is shown that this approach yields standard Newtonian results for systems in which the mean density profile is either plane-parallel or spherical. In the plane-parallel case we find that in the deep-MOND regime t2b scales with N as in the Newtonian case, but is shorter by the square of the factor by which MOND enhances the gravitational force over its Newtonian value for the same system. Near the centre of a spherical system that is in the deep-MOND regime, we show that the fluctuating component of the gravitational force is never small compared to the mean-field force; this conclusion surprisingly even applies to systems with a density cusp that keeps the mean-field force constant to arbitrarily small radius, and suggests that a cuspy centre can never be in the deep MOND regime. Application of these results to dwarf galaxies and groups and clusters of galaxies reveals that in MOND luminosity segregation should be far advanced in groups and clusters of galaxies, two body relaxation should have substantially modified the density profiles of galaxy groups, while objects with masses in excess of ∼ 10M⊙ should have spiralled to the centres of dwarf galaxies.

Numerical simulation of the fluid dynamics in a 3D spherical model of partially liquefied vitreous due to eye movements under planar interface conditions
Partially liquefied vitreous humor is a common physical and biochemical degenerative change in vitreous body which the liquid component gets separated from collagen fiber network and leads to form a region of liquefaction. The main objective of this research is to investigate how the oscillatory motions influence flow dynamics of partial vitreous liquefaction (PVL). So far computational fluid d...
متن کاملModified Newtonian Dynamics: success and problem on globular cluster scale
Many past attempts to kill MOND have only strengthened the theory. Better data on galaxy velocity curves clearly favor MOND (without fine-tuning) over cold dark matter. The usual critism on the incompleteness of classical MOND has spurred a Modified Relativity (MR) by Bekenstein. After outlining cosmology and lensing in MOND, we review MOND on small scales. We point out some potential problems ...
متن کاملThe Efficiency of Resonant Relaxation around a Massive Black Hole
Resonant relaxation (RR) is a rapid relaxation process that operates in the nearly-Keplerian potential near a massive black hole (MBH). RR dominates the dynamics of compact remnants that inspiral into a MBH and emit gravitational waves (extreme mass ratio inspiral events, EMRIs). RR can either increase the EMRI rate, or strongly suppress it, depending on its still poorly-determined efficiency. ...

We obtained precise line-of-sight radial velocities of 23 member stars of the remote halo globular cluster Palomar 4 (Pal 4) using the High Resolution Echelle Spectrograph at the Keck I telescope. We also measured the mass function of the cluster down to a limiting magnitude of V ∼ 28 mag using archival Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) imaging. We derived the cluster...
متن کاملModified Newtonian Dynamics of Large Scale Structure
We examine the implications of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) on the large scale structure in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. We employ a “Jeans swindle” to write a MOND-type relationship between the fluctuations in the density and the gravitational force, g. In linear Newtonian theory, |g| decreases with time and eventually becomes < g0 , the threshold below which MOND is dominant. ...
